Frozen AC line or coil
If you see frost or ice on the big copper line going into the outdoor unit, or on the indoor coil by the furnace, the AC isn't going to cool. Running it like that can damage the compressor.
What to do right now
- Turn the thermostat from Cool to Off.
- Set the fan to On. That moves warm house air across the coil and thaws it faster.
- Put towels down. There will be a lot of water. Make sure the drain line and pan can handle it.
- Give it a few hours. Don't chip or scrape the ice.
Common causes
- Dirty filter or blocked return vents. Not enough air moving across the coil.
- Blower running slow or a failing blower motor.
- Dirty indoor coil.
- Low refrigerant from a leak. If it freezes again after a new filter, this is often why.
- Running the AC on a cool night, in the low 60s or below.
If it thaws, you put in a clean filter, and it freezes up again within a day, it needs a tech.
