Heat pump blowing cold air
Heat pumps are common in Bridgeport and the newer houses around the area. A complaint we hear a lot in winter is that the air coming out of the vents feels cold.
What's normal
Heat pump air is warm, not hot. It usually comes out around 90 degrees, which can feel cool on your hand compared to a gas furnace. Every so often the outdoor unit goes into defrost for a few minutes. It may get loud, steam a little, and the air inside may feel cooler for a bit. That's normal.
What isn't normal
- Cold air for more than 15 minutes or so in heat mode.
- The outdoor unit is a solid block of ice that never clears.
- The outdoor fan isn't spinning, or the unit is humming but not running.
- The house keeps dropping even with the thermostat turned up.
Things to check
- Thermostat set to Heat, not Cool or Fan.
- Outdoor unit not buried in snow or leaves. Clear around it gently. Don't chip ice off the coil.
- Both breakers on, the inside one and the outdoor disconnect.
- Filter clean.
What a tech looks at
A stuck reversing valve, a bad defrost board or sensor, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor or contactor, or backup heat strips that aren't coming on when they should.
